Revelation 15:1-8

Wednesday, Dec 18, 2013

Key Verses: 3, 4                                                                                                 Kevin E. Jesmer

“And they sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, “Great and amazing are your deeds, O Lord God the Almighty! Just and true are your ways, O King of the nations! 4 Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship you, for your righteous acts have been revealed.” (ESV)

Lord, God Almighty. Thank you for your word and your Spirit that sustains us from day to day. Please nourish my soul with your life giving word. Mature me in faith. I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen!

Part l: God’s Wrath Completed (1, 5-8).

Verses 1 and 5-8, “Then I saw another sign in heaven, great and amazing, seven angels with seven plagues, which are the last, for with them the wrath of God is finished. ….5 After this I looked, and the sanctuary of the tent of witness in heaven was opened, 6 and out of the sanctuary came the seven angels with the seven plagues, clothed in pure, bright linen, with golden sashes around their chests. 7 And one of the four living creatures gave to the seven angels seven golden bowls full of the wrath of God who lives forever and ever, 8 and the sanctuary was filled with smoke from the glory of God and from his power, and no one could enter the sanctuary until the seven plagues of the seven angels were finished.” (ESV)

Seven angels with the seven last plagues appeared. They came out of the Most Holy Place, the throne room of God in heaven. They complete God’s wrath. When one of the four living creatures gave the seven angels seven golden bowls filled with God’s wrath, God’s temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God. This brings to mind Isaiah’s vision in the temple ion in 800 B.C. Isaiah 6:3-4 reads, “And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory!” 4 And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke.”(ESV)  God is holy and powerful and just and might. He is not one to be trifled with.

This is the final outpouring of God’s righteous judgment on all those who have rejected his mercy and followed the broad way of the devil. It is so sad that things had to come to this point. Why push God with our stubborn pride until the wrath of the God needs to be poured out? Wouldn’t it be a lot better to simply and humbly confess our sins, and repent and turn to the Lord for his free gift of salvation? That would be a whole lot easier on us. God would rather have that happen also. He does not want any to perish, but all to come to repentance.

To me it seems as clear as day. The choice is clear, repent and come to Jesus. But I guess it is n not so clear to everyone. It was no so clear to me for the first 22 years of my life. It truly takes a supernatural work of God to see God’s way of salvation and enter through it. On our own we can not even conceive of such a thing.

Part 2: The Song of The Lamb (2-4).

Verses 2-4, “And I saw what appeared to be a sea of glass mingled with fire—and also those who had conquered the beast and its image and the number of its name, standing beside the sea of glass with harps of God in their hands. 3 And they sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, “Great and amazing are your deeds, O Lord God the Almighty! Just and true are your ways, O King of the nations! 4 Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship you, for your righteous acts have been revealed.” (ESV)

Those who had been victorious over the beast and his image held harps given them by God. They were victorious because their names had been written in the Lamb’s book of life (13:8). They had refused, at great cost, to be marked with the number of the beast (13:16).They praised God with the song of Moses and the Lamb. All nations will come and worship the Lord God, for he alone is holy and worthy to be worshiped.

Here is a group of people who responded completely differently from the first group people. They resisted the Beast. They refused to worship and serve the Beast, but rather worshipped and served God alone. They did not become part of the economic system of the beast. (that means that they were willing to give up some economic privileges in order to be numbered among God’s people.) They had harps in their hands. That means that they worshipped God from the heart. They knew the song of Moses and the Lamb. They knew the word of God and the Gospel and cherished it enough to sing about it. They acknowledged God for who he truly is, God Almighty. They acknowledged that the ways of the God are just and true. They acknowledged God’s kingship over the nations, which includes his kingship over their own lives. They revered God’s holiness. They praised God for his righteous acts. They shared in God’s vision that all nations will come to God to worship him. They are totally different from the first group of people who refused to worship God even though judgment was coming upon them.

I thank God for helping me to come to Christ in 1986. I as blind and living in darkness in rebellion to God. I would have surely been a recipient of the wrath of God of it were not for God’s grace. Jesus helped me to see that he the Messiah, the Christ of God. He is the Savior of the world and my savior. I was living in rebellion, but God had mercy on me and called me his own. And now I can be numbered among his people, not because of any good that I have done, but because of his grace alone. My worship and adoration of God begins now and it will carry on into eternity. I too long for all nations to come and worship Jesus.  Lord, make yourself and your ways known to the nations.

I want to think about verse 4b, “…All nations will come and worship you, for your righteous acts have been revealed.”  Sometimes we think that the Gospel is losing steam and whole nations are separated from Christ. We think that traditionalism and nationalism has a greater draw for the hearts of people. But if we could have God’s eyes to see the reality we would see a conquering Christ. Christianity is the fastest growing religion in the world. There are fast growing Christian communities in Muslim countries and Communist countries. The Gospel is more powerful than any religion, philosophy or world view. Jesus conquered sin and death and the devil. He is victorious. All nations will worship the Lord.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for helping me to conquer the Beast through faith in Christ.  It is because of you that I could sing the song Moses and of the Lamb.

One Word: All nations will worship the Lamb
