12/11/11 MY EYES ARE FIXED ON YOU
Psalm 141:1-10                                                                 Sunday, December 11, 2011

Key Verse: 141:8                                                             Kevin Jesmer NIU UBF

“But my eyes are fixed on you, Sovereign LORD; in you I take refuge—do not give me over to death.”

Dear Lord, heavenly Father, my eyes are fixed on you. You are my Rock and my salvation. In you I can have peace and rest. In you can I alone find peace. I entrust to you all my cares. I pray that you may guide my life in the best possible way. Please help us all to worship Jesus this season. Help us to bring 12 people to the Christmas program. Please plant your word in my heart this morning. I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen!

1. Come quickly to me (1-7).

Verses 1-7 read, “ 1 I call to you, LORD, come quickly to me; hear me when I call to you. 2 May my prayer be set before you like incense; may the lifting up of my hands be like the evening sacrifice. 3 Set a guard over my mouth, LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips. 4 Do not let my heart be drawn to what is evil so that I take part in wicked deeds along with those who are evildoers; do not let me eat their delicacies. 5 Let a righteous man strike me—that is a kindness; let him rebuke me—that is oil on my head. My head will not refuse it, for my prayer will still be against the deeds of evildoers. 6 Their rulers will be thrown down from the cliffs, and the wicked will learn that my words were well spoken. 7 They will say, “As one plows and breaks up the earth, so our bones have been scattered at the mouth of the grave.”

David was in great danger, but he called to God to come quickly to him and hear his voice. His prayer in the morning was like burning incense, and when he lifted up his hands to God in the evening, it was like an evening sacrifice. He prayed that God might guard his mouth, that his heart might not be drawn to evil. He prayed to welcome rebukes as kind words. He did not seek revenge, but prayed that the evildoers might be punished and destroyed.

I must pray to the Lord when I am in danger. At my work I am in distress because of a personality conflict and certain event. All these things are weighing heavy on my soul. What can I do? Can I just sit and brew and think that time will take away these things. Or can I come to Jesus and entrust it all to Jesus. That is what King David did and that is what I can do. Actually that is the best solution. I thank God that he does not leave us on our own. I thank God that shelters us under his wings.

2. I take refuge in you (8-10).

Verses 8-10 read, “8 But my eyes are fixed on you, Sovereign LORD; in you I take refuge—do not give me over to death. 9 Keep me safe from the traps set by evildoers, from the snares they have laid for me. 10 Let the wicked fall into their own nets, while I pass by in safety.

David decided to fix his eyes on the Sovereign God. He took refuge in God. God would deliver him from death and the snares of the evildoers. He was sure that they would fall into their own snares while he passed by in safety.

I too need to fix my eyes on Jesus. John 1:29 reads, “The next day John saw Jesus coming before him and said, ‘Look the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world!’” Look the Lamb of God. Fix your eyes on Jesus. That means to not fix your eyes on other things. I must not fix my eyes on my troubles and my problems. I must not fix my eyes on interpersonal issues and not on my mistakes, (However I should work hard to resolve these issues.) I must not let them eat me up. I need to fix my eyes on Jesus and he will lead me through. He will guide my life.

Prayer: O Lord, let me cry out to you in all situations. In this dark world, let me take refuge in you, the Sovereign Lord.

One Word: Find refuge in Jesus.
