12/28/11 DO IT ALL IN THE NAME OF THE LORD JESUS
Colossians 3:12-17                                         Wednesday, December 28, 2011
Key Verse: 3:17                                               Kevin Jesmer NIU UBF

“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

Dear Lord heavenly Father, thank you for giving my life hope and meaning. Thank you for helping me to be a servant of the word of God. Please help me to serve you with a sincere heart. Please help to preach the Gospel at the #Waterman #Presbyterian Church. Bless the fellowship Help us to grow strong in the word of God. Please give us all clear life direction for 2012. Lord, I pray that my kids may be deeply moved by the winter conferences that they are attending. May Jenn be blessed through her participation in “The Well” Conference. Lord, I pray that you plant your word deeply in my heart. I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen!

1. Over all these virtues put on love (12-14).

Verses 12-14, “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”

God loved us so much that he chose us in Jesus Christ to be forgiven and to become holy. We are God’s chosen people. Paul encourages us to be clothed with several virtues as the basic qualities of a Christian: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. These are fruit the Spirit of Christ creates in us as we yield to him (Gal 5:16,22-23). As we are clothed with these, we can bear with and forgive one another, even when they have hurt us. Over all these, we should put on love, the love of Jesus for us, and then love others. This binds us together in unity.

I am not clothed in these basic Christian virtues…compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Like, today I easily become frustrated and angry with those who are close to me. This is not bearing with others. This is not being Christ like. I need to bear the fruit of the spirit which is, “22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” Lord, I am so far from Jesus, especially in my own home. Please help me to be clothed in Christ.

I just have to realize how Jesus has loved me and is loving me right now. He is bearing with me. He is not getting frustrated with me. He is patient and kind and gentle all the time. How can I be any less than others? How can I not aspire to grow to be like my Lord Jesus? I pray to be able to grow in the image of Christ.

2. Do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus (15-17).

Verse 15-17, “ Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 17And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

Paul admonishes us to let the peace of Christ and the message of Christ rule and dwell in us as individuals and among us as a community. This community in Christ is called to peace. We teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. In each verse, Paul mentions thankfulness to God. What is our motive and purpose in all this? It is the name of the Lord Jesus. We do this for his honor and glory.

I need to live in community. I need to be in community. I need to deal with issues that arise in my relationship with others in Christ like way. It is through Bible study and prayer and hymns and praising God. This means submitting all of my relationships to Jesus. This means putting my own issues aside and my own ways of dealing with conflicts and following Jesus’ way. This is hard to do because I fall back on my own means, which fails and only leads people to be disconnected and isolated. Lord, save me from myself and my sin and help me to trust in you, Lord, the way, the truth and the Life.

Prayer: Thank you for choosing us and forgiving us. Help me forgive and love others, teach and admonish, and whatever I do, let me do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus.

One Word: Do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus
