8/29/12. Hebrews 3:1-6. FOCUS ON THE ONE GREATER THAN MOSES-devotional

Hebrews 3:1-6  Key verse 3:1   Kevin Jesmer NIU UBF Wednesday 8-29-12

“Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself”

Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for saving me from my sins and helping me to follow you from day to day. Help me to grow and mature in faith. Help me to be a conduit where others may grow spiritually around me, starting in my home. I pray for the people of New Orleans that they may be saved from flooding during this oncoming hurricane. Please also bless the upcoming Midwestern Staff conference. May it be a time fellowship in the Lord and with each other. May communities of love be formed among us. Please grant me one word of God to hold onto. I thank you and I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen!

Part 1: Fix Your Thoughts on Jesus (1).

Verse 1, “Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest.

Since Jesus suffered on the cross to make us his holy family, we share the heavenly calling to live as his brothers and sisters, and proclaiming the gospel together as Jesus’ family members. Therefore, we need to fix our thoughts on him, considering carefully his life and position. Jesus is our apostle, the one God sent to us to bring us salvation. Jesus is also our high priest who intercedes for us and presented the sacrifice of atonement for our sins. We can overcome this world and the power of sin and death and live out our calling in life, as we fix our thoughts on Jesus every day.

I need to fix my thoughts on Jesus. I need to focus on Christ. I can do this by taking time out to meditate on the word of God. I can pray. I can preach the word through 1:1 Bible study and through the internet. I can prepare the word of God faithfully each day with a prayerful heart. I can practice the presence of God like Brother Lawrence. I can engage in Christian intellectual pursuits. Mostly though, I need to focus on Jesus by prayerfully meditating on the word of God.

I pray that God may help me to develop a rich inner life and promote a rich spiritual life among my family members. I pray that we may all learn to fix our eyes on Jesus.

Part 2: Jesus Is Worthy of Greater Honor Than Moses (2-6).

Verses 2-6, “He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house. Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. “Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s house,” bearing witness to what would be spoken by God in the future. But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory.”

Jesus and Moses were both faithful to God. But Jesus is worthy of greater honor than Moses as a builder is greater than the building. Moses was a servant of God through the Law that bears witness to Jesus, and Jesus is the reality, faithful as the Son over God’s house.

I learn here that Jesus is greater than even Moses. To strong Jewish people, this sounds like a blasphemous statement. But it is a true one. Jesus is greater. He is the focus of all the Old Testament and all of history. (though some may argue that point.) I can not think of anyone greater than Jesus Christ. Can you? I need to give Jesus the honor that is due him. I need to give him a place of prominence in my life, my heart and in my family.

We are God’s house when we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope of glory in Jesus. That is we must hold onto the Gospel. We must hold onto gospel faith. When we cannot hold onto gospel faith then God will help us. That is one of the roles of Jesus our High Priest. Sometimes I feel stress and trouble in my heart, but my faith remains by the grace of God. I am God’s child. Nothing can change that. It is because God helps me to have confidence and hope in which all Christians glory in.

Prayer: Lord, help me to fix my thoughts on Jesus, who is greater than Moses, and hold firmly to him.

One Word: I pray to fix my eyes on my apostle and high priest, Jesus Christ.
