Baseball in Thompson

2nd and 3rd Generation page

Baseball in Thompson: I personally was never in a baseball league in Thompson, but I liked to play the game. There were some baseball diamonds behind Hemlock, beside Juniper School. We would have pickup baseball games there. As kids we would climb the chain link fences towering over the batter’s plate, and rest on the overhanging chain link fencing at the top. I remember some memorable baseball games at Sasagiu Rapids camp ground. I know only one friend of mine who played minor league baseball for a season, Dave Corcoran. One time, when I was in grade seven, I was watching a baseball game and the adults in the crowds asked me to an umpire. I didn’t know what to do. I tried, but I was not decisive and partial to the banter from the crowds. I was unable to make authoritative calls. It was not a good experience for me. All my life I had no problem batting a ball or catching a ball. I chaulk that up to playing outside and running about in nature all my youth. It helped me to play baseball occasionally. I still keep two gloves and a fast ball in my coat closet to play catch with someone. I learned that Red Sangster was the one that helped develop baseball leagues in Thompson. I included some articles written by John Barker and Ian Graham about Thompson baseball. I hope that minor league baseball can come back after the pandemic is over. Some of the pictures I am posting are INCO leagues. Some of the pics were played on the diamonds near Juniper School. It looks like a team called the Thompson Reds were famous. Has anyone else been involved in Thompson baseball leagues?
