BJ’s Roller Drome: Roller Skating Rink in Thompson…1980’s

BJ’s Roller Drome: There were a couple posts of this FUN place in the past. But it was a great meeting place on Friday and Saturday night that I just thought it is time to share about this place again. (I collected and added a few more pictures.) There were dozens of people hanging out in the parking lot and the lobby watching people roller skating. People liked watching who was roller skating and finding out where the parties were. Sometimes, having large numbers of young people hanging out in the parking lot and lobby was not good. I heard of a couple fights happening (but never witnessed them). I do remember Melvin Rockwell perfecting the “shoot the duck” technique in the center of the skating floor. I paid a few times to go roller skating, but lots of times I hung out in the lobby. I could never do the “shoot the duck”. One day the management decided to put up a wall in the lobby, so that people couldn’t just watch people roller skating. They may have thought that people would pay to go in. But people went there, not only to roller skate, but also to see and be seen. This ended with the wall. And soon after, that was the end of the BJ’s Roller Drome. It sure was great place though. Bill and Wilma Harrison were involved in the building of a Roller Drome. It was sold to a partner before closing. I thank all of the people who posted pictures of the BJ’s Roller Drome in past posts. Some pics were from Google images. Enjoy.
