DHS Baccalaureate: For those who think Christianity is dead in public schools

Dekalb High School Baccalaureate: For those who think Christianity is dead in public schools, I beg to differ.  On June 1, 2014 our kid’s public High School held a Baccalaureate.

The following is the definition: “Baccalaureate is a centuries-old religious graduation tradition that started in England, but in the United States, the term generally refers to a non-denominational ceremony held a few days before high school or college graduation. Unlike the massive commencement exercises held in stadiums or arenas, baccalaureate ceremonies offer a quieter, more intimate opportunity to pause and reflect on this rite of passage, hear faculty members offer advice to the graduating class and enjoy students’ musical talents.”

The Baccalaureate we had was very Christian. There were 8 pastors from the community. There were hymns and prayer and testimonies and several sermonettes.  It was one of the best Christian worship services I was at. I plan to go to these even when my kids have graduated.

There are those who say that the gospel can not be preached in public schools. But I see it being done at DHS. There is the Fellowship of Christian Athletes who meet on campus. There is the “See You At The Pole.”. There is the “Prayer Box” in the cafeteria and there is the Baccalaureate. There are ways to preach the Gospel, but people have to follow the rules. It all must be student initiated and led; no posters; no public funding etc. Christian parents…instead of criticizing the public school boards, pray for your kids and teach them how to initiate and lead Christian programs. If you do it right, the public school system is a vast mission field.
