Getting to know the ViaRail train stop of Allenwater Bridge NW Ontario

Getting to know the ViaRail train stop of Allenwater Bridge NW Ontario. This place is not a community in the classical sense of the term. It is a train stop, where the ViaRail train stops to pick up or drop off. There is a fishing camp here, with cabins and supplies where adventurers fish for a week. It is accessible by boat and by train. It is isolated and provides remote fishing adventures without the high cost of flying into a camp. I was on the train, going west, when we picked up five guys and their supplies and even a canoe in the middle of the night. Transporting the canoe cost them $100. It sounds exciting. These camps are connected to Sioux Lookout and Winnipeg and even to Toronto to the east.  It is 30-60 minutes from Sioux Lookout. (There are some more pictures at the end of this article.)

The river begins at the community of Allanwater Bridge at the confluence of the two branches of the Brightsand River: the western branch arriving as the outlet from Kawaweogama Lake and the eastern branch arriving as the outlet from McEwan Lake. The Canadian National Railway Canadian National Railway transcontinental main line over a bridge at the point of confluence, and is the location of Allanwater Bridge railway station, served by Via Rail transcontinental Canadian trains.

The river flows north and splits into two channels, then recombines, takes in the right tributary Nemo River and reaches Brennan Lake. The river leaves the lake east over Brennan Falls to Granite Lake, and then leaves that lake north over Granite Falls. It continues north over Black Beaver Rapids, Little Sturgeon Rapids and Sturgeon Rapids to reach its mouth at Wabakimi Lake on the Ogoki River. The Ogoki flows via the Albany River to James Bay.

With the exception of a short stretch at the start, the river lies within Wabakimi Provincial Park.

Where is Allanwater Bridge Lodge?

AWB is located about 25 miles east of Savant Lake, in Northwestern Ontario. We’re on the western borders of two of Ontario’s premiere provincial parks- surrounded by old growth forests, structure filled lakes and exceptional scenery. The Allanwater fishery is made up of many lakes and rivers and is about seventeen miles long and four miles wide. Two rivers, the Brightsands and the Allanwater River supply the Allanwater fishery and flow into our two lakes, Lake Kawaweogama and McKewan Lake. AWB is located at the confluence of these 2 fabulous river systems. The Allanwater River starts about 15 miles south of the camp and has its headwaters in Lake Seseganaga, which is about 15 miles wide and 20 miles long. The Brightsand river is an Ontario treasure and preserved as a provincial waterway Park.

Fly in – Train in

Tucked away in the confines of Northwestern Ontario along the border of Wabakimi Provincial Wilderness Park, AWB is truly one of Canada’s best kept secrets. An economical alternative to high-priced, over-fished fly-in camps, AWB is a destination that fulfills every fisherman’s dream – a remote fishery that provides some of the best Walleye and Northern Pike fishing in the world – without costing you a bundle.

We’re different because we’re located at the confluence of two incredible rivers – the Brightsands and Allanwater. These two rivers herd the fish into predictable staging locations and offer unlimited food for our hungry walleyes, which makes for a very enjoyable day of fishing- even if the barometer has bottomed out and the bite is light. If you decide to explore the numerous lake fishing opportunities, you will find countless reefs and eskers that commonly hold 30+ inch hogs. The myriad of streams and eddies hold Northern Pike that have an angry demeanor with little patience for your offerings. 50″ Northerns are a reality, not a fancy lie. Be prepared though, you’ll pretty much be alone in your battle because there’s lots of water, but not a lot of people.

Lodging

Guests describe our six cabins as clean, comfortable and accommodating. They aren’t five-star fancy, but they’re nice enough to please a discriminating traveler on their first Canadian fishing trip. They don’t have televisions, but they do have a million dollar view with the look and feel of traditional Canadian fishing lodges reminiscent of the early 40’s. Knotty pine or log interiors with comfortable beds, filtered running water that is about as pure a drink as you’ll ever have in your life, propane cooking stoves, refrigerators, tables, chairs and all cooking utensils, pots, pans and dinnerware. Pillows and cases are provided. (If you need blankets and sheets, we’ve got those too!)

Moose Hunting

Moose are plentiful in our neck of the woods. Each year AWB offers a limited amount of trophy moose hunts. Our hunt locations on the Albany and Misehakow rivers are legendary, and are considered one of Ontario’s best. Both areas have consistently turned in high success rates for trophy quality Moose including an amazing record book 62” Bull taken by bow.

Each location boasts nearly 10 miles of untouched pristine wilderness river Moose Habitat with the added bonus of fabulous fishing
