Let [her] return to the days of [her] youthful vigor”

In Loving Memory

of

Olga M. Statland

December 2, 1918—December 15, 2012

Olga was born in Nicaragua the second child of Juan José and Carmela Espinales. As a young teenager, she suffered the devastating loss of her mother in Death. She would miss her dearly during those critical years into adulthood, marriage and child bearing. Although, Olga was Catholic by upbringing, she felt a spiritual need for knowing God, which the Church never satisfied. At the urging of a neighbor who was a devout Baptist, she began to read the Bible and found comfort in what she read.

One day in early 1950, while trying to persuade a neighbor lady to attend a Biblical play at her church, the lady scolded her for believing in the teachings of the Trinity of God, immortality of the human soul and hellfire. Baffled, Olga responded,” how could anyone doubt the Scriptural validity of such widely accepted doctrines?” The lady admitted that since she had been studying the Bible with Jehovah’s Witnesses for only a short time, she was not capable of disproving these teachings, but she knew someone who could. Olga replied, “send her to me and I will show her”. By the third week of Bible study, not only did she realize that these and other doctrines were in error, but she had found the True God, Jehovah. In November 1950, she symbolized her dedication to Him by getting baptized.  Six months later, a single mom with one small child, she entered full time service as a Regular Pioneer.

In June, 1958, Olga again made a vow, this time to a wonderful husband and former missionary, Edwin Statland with whom she served as a Special Pioneer. After leaving Nicaragua, they settled in Brooklyn, NY. Eventually the rest of the immediate and extended family also settled in Brooklyn. In July 1981, Olga’s devoted Husband fell asleep in death. But, through the years, Olga’s zeal for the ministry did not diminish. Her efforts were rewarded as many of her Bible students embraced true worship. In the years after becoming handicapped with paralysis, she was always prepared with Bible literature to offer anyone who would be present at the bank, medical consultories or other public places. She loved her God, Jehovah and wanted to help others get to know Him.

Olga is survived by a daughter, Norma Calderón; a son, Lionel Chavarria and his wife, Ann (Giggi) Chavarria;  grand children, Eliu, Celio, Neri, Maria (deceased), Edwin, Ralph, Emmanuel and David; great grand children, Desiree, Kelly, Bianca, Christina, Vanessa, Adrianna, Emily, Rachel, Robert, Rafael, Francis, Christopher, Vincent, and Daniel; great-great grand children, Lauren and Gabriel, and a host of relatives, friends and spiritual brothers and sisters who will miss her dearly, but who hold to the marvelous hope of seeing her again in God’s new earth where “no resident will say ‘I am sick’”—Isaiah 33:24.
