Question:   Why is youth so much more valued than old (or more mature) age in our culture? I have so much in my fifties which I could not have even dreamed of having in my twenties–not much money but other things I value. I don’t want to be stuck into the mentality that what has gone is better than what is coming. At the age of 70 or 80 we can contribute even more than we did at the age of 20’s.

Answer:  I agree that people 50 to 120 have a lot to offer in terms of wisdom, knowledge and understanding. I think that the Spirit of God helps us to share what we know and our wisdom with others. It is not easy. Western culture almost idolizes youth. They pay little regard to elders. Unlike tribal cultures or Eastern cultures. More senior people have to win the right to teach and share what they know in our culture. Most young people don’t care what they know. Older people have to know how to share it in ways that will be accepted. When I worked in a nursing home, for a couple years I asked some 75 – 100 year old people if they could impart any wisdom to me. None of them could. As we age we have wisdom but we don’t know how to share it. I am learning the importance of God’s wisdom to share things with the younger generation , as I am 49 years old. Here is an article I wrote about the subject a couple of months ago.
