Ida (Jesmer) Morton’s letter to her uncle Hubert Jesmer 1960

writing letters

Gilbert Plains, Manitoba

Dec. 15/’60

Dear Uncle Hubert.

Have been thinking about you a lot lately and wondered how you all are doing and if Ernesta got a suitable job since that time she came to Victoria to see us. We were terribly sorry it turned out as it did but Ernesta will understand I know.

You will see by the above, that we are in Gilbert Plains with our only daughter Hazelle. We came here the end of August as she had to go to Winnipeg hospital to undergo an operation and we came here to look after her little son and her home. She is home but not too well yet so presume we will be here until after the New Year.

While visiting my brothers Carl and Harvey in August we drove away north of Muenster to a place called St Brieux to see a third cousin of ours we hadn’t seen but she sent word to us that we were related. She is Mrs Ed Harmon. She says her mother was a Jesmer and that your uncle, N.E. Jesmer was her mother’s uncle Nelson too. If you are interested in her uncle Hubert write her and I am sure you will hear from her and will know better who she really is. She is a lovely person whom I am glad to claim as a relative. We were only there a few hours and she had her brother and others there from the States hunting so we couldn’t get much talking to each other. She is about 70 years old and very active and talkative. Write her.

We have had a lovely fall here and not much winter yet like Manitoba gets. I am glad as living in Victoria six years spoils us.

When we leave here we will be going to Alberta to visit our three sons there, then may go to the coast to see my husband’s sister who lives near Cloverdale. If we do go to the coast I will certainly go to see you all.

We have no idea yet where we will settle. I like the coast, especially Victoria but Will would rather settle here. He is afraid his asthma will get bad again at the coast.

Well my dears I must close and write a few more letters. Please write and let us know how you are. Maybe Ernesta would write.

Heaps of love to all.

We’ll send his love too.                           Your niece Ida Mae Morton or Mrs. W.A. Morton.
