Laurena M. Jesmer. Laurena is the daughter of Sidney and Minnie (Malotte) Jesmer. She married Jess Angstman. She is the niece of my great grandfather, Nelson Adulphus Jesmer. The census info is 1910 census.

Minnie Malotte was born in Jul 1866 in CAN. She married Sidney Joseph Jesmer on 25 Dec 1890 in St Patricks, Benton Co, MN.

Now, here was a lawyer who loved to defend; He’d work at such cases for days upon end. “The public defender, I’m known as” said he, “The crime in itself matters little to me; Each man is entitled to get a square break- I’ll sure as hell help him to get that fair shake.”

Schooling: | He stated at a little country school near Empire. His family moved and then he attended a school 1 1/2 miles from their farm. He graduated from Princeton High and he then started law school at St. Paul in the fall of 1910 |

Family: | (1 of 13 children) Twins, Walter and Warren, Laura, Albert, Jess, Maynard (Tim), Forrest, Lawrence, Esther, Ralph, George, and twins Jack and Ezra. |
Family History: | After moving 3 times they found themselves in Princeton on a 160 acre farm. They then formed a baseball team known as Baldwin. |
Job: | He worked at the St. Paul Daily News soliciting subscriptions. His brother Albert worked there with him and they each made $50.00 a month. They both attended school at night. |
Personal Story: | After two years of law school he came to Montana (1912.) He traveled on the Great Northern, was let off at Malta and went to Harlem on the skidoo. He operated the Harlem News for about1 1/5 years. He sold it to H.G Anderson. He was appointed U.S. Commissioner and there was no salary, they only received fees and commissions. He built a shack and was in the real estate business, and was a justice of the peace. In 1916 he married Laurena Jesmer. They built a house in Harlem, which is still there. They moved to Havre in 1927. He resigned as U.S Commissioner after 12 years in office. |
Farming Life: | He bought a section of school land by his homestead. He hired men to do the actual farming. He had his own brand, bought 44 colts, and 40 from another man and turned them lose on the range. He seeded 400 acres of land. He was engaged in buying and selling cattle and sheep. He never made much money but whenever a baby was born in the family he bought another section of land. Eventually he lost it all, either for taxes or he couldn’t make the payments. His last sheep he sold to Chris Loris who was from Harlem for $8.00 a head. |
Achievements: | He received every honor Elkdon gives in Montana. Going through all the chairs in the B.P.O.E. lodge 1201. Served as district Governor and State President. He was a life member and has been an Elk for 45 years. A charter member of the Havre Lions Club. He was an international councilor in 1969. He has been a member of St. Jude’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. |
Children: | Their sons, Jess Jr. and Paul live at Havre. Daughters, Mary Jean, Schwietz, and Anne Arlene Jamber, live at St. Paul Minnesota and Kalispell Montana |
Business: | His law business at Havre was mostly criminal defense and divorce actions, a lot of which came from Blaine County. He rarely used any notes because he had a prodigious memory. His business was first located on the North side of First Street over the old Havre Daily News location. In August 1927, he moved to the Masonic Temple Building. He was appointed to the State Department of Public Welfare where he served 8 years on the board as by Vice Chairman.
