Gideon Lays Out Fleece

Judges 6:33-40 Lesson 8
Key Verse 6: 36-37

“Gideon said to God, “If you will save Israel by my hand as you have promised— 37 look, I will place a wool fleece on the threshing floor. If there is dew only on the fleece and all the ground is dry, then I will know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you said.”

Part l: The Mobilizing Of Four Tribes (33-35)

1. Who were the people who were attacking Israel? (6:1-6) How were they doing it? What were the results of their oppression? How were the people trying to cope? (6:2,11) How does this relate to our struggle against the powers of sin and darkness? How should we respond?

2. How did God intervene in light of the oppression of his people? (34) What happened to Gideon? (34) What do we know about the Spirit of God? (3:10; 2 Tim 1:7)

3. Who were called to follow him? How did they respond? (35) What does this teach us about the work of God?

Part ll: Gideon’s Desire For Encouragement (6:36-40)

4. Did Gideon believe the promises of God? (6:14-16) Why did Gideon put out the fleece? What answer was he looking for? (36) Did he believe God’s promise? How can we apply the fleece principle to our present situation?

5. Why would the threshing floor be a good place to do this fleece test? Who did the
Canaanites believe to be the god of the threshing floor?

6. Why did Gideon ask for a reverse test of the fleece after the first one was answered? Why do we usually ask for more and more signs?

7. What is the best way of receiving confirmation from God? (2 Tim 3:16-17; Psalm 119:105) What is the promise given us by Jesus?
