The Bible states that problem of sin in human hearts was not solved by the flood. Genesis 8:21 reads, “21 The Lord smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: “Never again will I curse the ground because of humans, even though every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done.”  (NIV) We can see sin Ham, when he gazed upon Noah’s body as he lay sleeping and drunk. Ham’s descendents were cursed by Noah. (Gen 9:24) We can see the presence of sin in humanity’s heart with the declaration of the law of capital punishment. (Gen 9:5) The flood did not solve the fundamental problem of sin in the hearts of people. There was sin dwelling in the hearts of Noah and his family in the ark. Only Jesus and the Gospel can solve the sin problem of people, one at a time and solve it for all eternity.

The director set out to show that the evil was right there with Noah’s family. We can see it in the brooding resentment of Ham against his dad, blaming him for not allowing him to marry a lady that he chose. We can see it in the flashbacks of the snake and short video of the fall of mankind and the murder of Able. We can see it with the “messed up” view of God’s character and purpose that Noah held in his heart. We can see the fruit of sin, by the hellish environment that Noah created for nine months for the whole family, as his granddaughters were gestating in their mothers womb. We can see it with the intrusion of King Tubal-Cain when he cut his way into the side of the Ark with his ax.

The King’s presence in the Ark is a symbolic way of saying that, though one may try to isolate themselves from the world, evil is still right there with them. You can’t get away from it. I think that director did a good job bringing this fact out. (We Christians know that the only way is through the Gospel of Jesus Christ.) Just isolating ourselves in our sheltered homes and churches is not going to keep sin away from our own hearts and our family’s hearts. Jesus calls us to be in the world, but not of it. We need to stand up as lights in the darkness, pointing the world to the True Light, Jesus Christ. (John 8:12)
