Salvation Army

2nd and 3rd Generation page

The Salvation Army: In a recent post about the Mayor Don Maclean, it was discovered that he was part of the Salvation Army. Don and his wife Norma were instrumental in founding the first Salvation Army Corp in Thompson in 1962. Sunday school began in their home and Don assumed the role of chauffeur, driving 25-30 children to and from school. I used to work with another lady in the 1980’s, at the Thompson Co-op store that my mother managed. The lady was Helen Thorne (Maclean). She was very nice. Her and her husband were very active. I think that they made rounds in the local bars witnessing to people. I was invited, in 1978 to a Salvation Army Halloween party. I went by myself.  In the 1978 picture I was the third from the left. That was amazing, because I was raised in the Catholic Church. Somehow, I accepted the invite and went by myself. It was fun. The Salvation Army does good work. So much so that my father was even impressed. He once said, “If I ever became a member of a church, it would be the Salvation Army.” This post is dedicated to Helen Maclean and her husband and to the church that has done so much community serving for decades.
