Moses was my G-grandfather’s, (Nelson A. Jesmer) younger brother. I wanted to get the info I have on Moses, “out there” so that others may enjoy learning about their history. If you have any questions, want some changes or have some info to contribute, please contact me at Kevinjesmer@yahoo.com.

The story of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Saint Cloud flows out of the lived faith of the bishops, priests, religious women and men and the laity of Central Minnesota. Two “streams” of care can be followed since the diocese was formed in 1857: care of children and support for families and individuals. Care of Children Early records show the organized care of orphans by the Benedictine Sisters in 1875 in Saint Joseph. In 1900 the care of orphans was given to the Franciscan Sisters in Little Falls at the St Otto’s Orphanage. In 1924 a new facility, the Saint Cloud Orphanage was opened on the banks of the Mississippi River south of the city of St Cloud. Promoted by Bishop Joseph Busch the facility was considered “cutting edge” and advertised across the United States. For the next forty years the Franciscan Sisters raised money for and took care of orphans and children whose parent(s) could not care for them. Vegetable gardens, crop fields, a dairy operation and donations made the orphanage self-sustaining

Catholic Charities St. Cloud Children’s Home has been working with youth for nearly 90 years. Today (2014), we are a residential treatment facility for young people ages 9-18.  We are proud to be family-focused, youth-centered and strength-based.

The Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls, Minnesota, is a Roman Catholic congregation of religious women of the Third Order of St. Francis of Assisi. Our community was founded in central Minnesota in 1891 by sixteen women who had previously been members of another Franciscan congregation. In God’s providential plan, these women, having lost contact with their original foundress who had become ill in Rome, received permission from the Bishop of the St. Cloud Diocese to become a congregation under his jurisdiction. Having been granted a piece of land on the south side of Little Falls, the sisters, with the help of generous benefactors, constructed a building that immediately served as a residence for orphan children, a hospital, a home for the aged, and a convent for the sisters. From these simple beginnings, the sisterhood flourished and continued to develop ministries in health care, education, and social services throughout Minnesota and into Wisconsin. Eventually the sisters’ desire to serve others and to promote the Gospel carried them to places throughout the United States and to other continents, notably South and Central America and Africa.
