Stop Worshipping Idols and Begin to Glorify God.

Stop Worshipping Idols and Begin to Glorify God.
Psalm 115:1-18 Key Verse: 115:1 Shp Kevin Jesmer NIU UBF\
“1 Not to us, O LORD, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness.”

Psalm 115 teaches something very practical about what to trust in during these turbulent times. We must give up trusting in the idols of our culture and times and trust in the God of the Bible. Verses 1-8 read, “1 Not to us, O LORD, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness. 2 Why do the nations say, “Where is their God?” 3 Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him. 4 But their idols are silver and gold, made by the hands of men. 5 They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but they cannot see; 6 they have ears, but cannot hear, noses, but they cannot smell; 7 they have hands, but cannot feel, feet, but they cannot walk; nor can they utter a sound with their throats. 8 Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them.”

People become like the idols they make and worship. If we put our trust in things we can see and touch, we become idol worshipers. Idols deceive with their outer appearance, but they inherently do not have life, nor can they give life. Idols cannot do anything. They cannot speak, hear, smell, or walk. Idol worshipers cynically say of God’s people, “Where is their God?”
I suppose that one of our biggest idols is money. People trust in money. But the thing is, we never have enough money. We are living in a world where it costs $6 to go on a ride at the fair. We are living in a country where making $100,000 per year only maintains your basic life and keeps you from going into debt….where one accident or one sickness can plunge you into home foreclosure. Money can never be our idol, because you can never have enough of it.
Also money can not buy you love. You can be rich, but what is the point of being rich if you don’t have anyone to share your wealth with, or your time? Some people spend their entire lives worrying about their money. In the end they just have enough to survive to the end of their lives. They exist, comfortably and if they are lucky, they can give some money to their children. So many spend the last 20 years of their lives lonely to tears. Money can never be our idol.
Other people can not be our idols either. People will eventually disappoint us. Even the funniest person becomes boring. Even the most interesting person will become dull. Even the love of other will grow cold. How can we ever think that we can depend on other people to be our idols?
Government can not be an idol to depend on. Look at the mess we are in today. it looks like it is going to get worse. So many are helpless to come out of their economic slump. The government is even scaling back on funding programs for people with special needs. Depending on government, like depending on an idol is futile.
The psalmist goes on to tell us why we should trust in the God of the Bible and not in idols. Verses 9-18 read, “ 9 O house of Israel, trust in the LORD— he is their help and shield. 10 O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD— he is their help and shield. 11 You who fear him, trust in the LORD— he is their help and shield. 12 The LORD remembers us and will bless us: He will bless the house of Israel, he will bless the house of Aaron, 13 he will bless those who fear the LORD—
small and great alike. 14 May the LORD make you increase, both you and your children. 15 May you be blessed by the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. 16 The highest heavens belong to the LORD, but the earth he has given to man. 17 It is not the dead who praise the LORD, those who go down to silence; 18 it is we who extol the LORD, both now and forevermore. Praise the LORD.”
Our God is not like idols. He is real. He is alive and ruling the heavens and the earth for he is the Maker of heaven and earth. God is in heaven. He does whatever he desires. He is faithful and loving. The Lord is the help and shield of all who trust him. God is the one Person, the one being, the only one we can trust to carry us through the tough times. If we hold onto Matthew 6:33 and seek God’s kingdom as top priority in our lives, he will provide.) He also remembers and blesses those who fear him, whether great or small. He wants to bless their children as well. King David said that he has never seen the children of the righteous begging bread in the streets. Psalm 37:25 reads, “I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread. They are always generous and lend freely; their children will be blessed.”
The highest heavens belong to God, but he has given earth to people. While we are alive on earth, we must praise God’s name now and forever, for God is the only God we can trust and the only one who keeps our hearts free from the slavery of idol worship. He is the only one worthy of our worship and our devotion. Now is the time to stop wasting your precious years worshipping, and trusting in, and serving idols and decide to serve and trust the one true God.
