I just went to see the movie, “The Conjuring”. It was the first scary movie that I saw in 27 years.  I was impressed. It was scary but not crazy scary.  It had a good story line and also there were some very good spiritual lessons to be learned. Yes, you read correctly! There are spiritual lessons to be learned.

  1. Holding onto church dogma renders us impotent. The Catholic Church was not quick to help this family that was being possessed.  The priest said that the family was not Catholic and the kids were not baptized as Catholics and so he hesitated helping them. When he did agree to help, the help came too late. It is a good commentary on what happens when we hold onto church dogma and regulations above helping people.  When we do we miss opportunities to give aid and we end up giving help at the wrong time. We have to let go of the church dogma and simply love people.
  1. God works through lay people in the church. The husband and wife team were no ordained exorcists. They were experts and lay people. But when the critical moment came, they took matters into their own hands and did an exorcism, overriding the churches policy. They believed and accepted the  fact that they were servants of God and they had authority to do the work of God. In this case it was holding an exorcism.
  1. Servants of God must be willing to embrace suffering. Because of paranormal investigations in the past, the exorcist’s wife was weakened in her spirit. He was hesitant to allow his wife to participate in the exorcism. But they did it together, even though they knew the cost and even the cost to their own daughter. They were willing to embrace sufferings to love people.
  1. Servants of God must be willing to make a relationship with the people they care for. The family asked for help. The exorcists were busy people, giving talks on campus’ but they made time and used their equipment. The husband even took time out to fix and old Chevy the family owned. They were into relationship building.
  1. Decisions of faith to stand and fight the spiritual battle makes demons scared and fight back harder. The exorcist couple decided to stand and fight the demonic forces. When they made the decision, then evil spirits set out to attack their daughter miles away. The demons sensed that they were a threat and they fought back. That is how it is with evil spirits. They will leave you alone when you are not opposing them, but when you dig your feet in and stand your ground then they get riled up and fight back.
  1. The power of love can give us strength to fight evil from within, until we are set free. The mother was totally possessed. She was trying to kill her child. But the woman exorcist told her to remember the family photo and the love that the family had for one another. The love that they had between them was enough to get the woman to “fight from the inside” and be set free from the power of evil that was driving her to do terrible things. Love is very powerful. God is love.
  1.  Servants of God must be willing to sacrifice to keep evil from the community. There were hundreds of objects stored the exorcist’s home. These objects contained evil spirits. They were indwelt by evil spirits. After the demons were driven out of people they dwelt in the objects. What do you do with these objects afterwards? Do you trap them in lead cases and drop them to the bottom of the sea? No. The exorcist was keeping them in his home, in a room, where they sat safe and sound, most of the time. His family was willing to house these items, in their own home, so that others may not be harassed. These exorcists are great.
