Thompson Airport

The Thompson Airport. It was built in 1961. (I included some early pics). Our family liked taking a road trip to the airport and eating a light meal at the restaurant there. I only flew out of there once. I was in grade 8 and my friend Dave and I won a contest, “salute to mining”. Part of the prize was a flight over Thompson and to Paint Lake and back. I was so air sick. Dave was too and he lost it into a paper bag right next to me. He hit my coat too. My mom flew out of there for a medical emergency to Winnipeg. It was a perfect distance for a nice car ride at night, listening to music. It was also a good distance for a bike ride (4 miles away). I added some contemporary pics and one picture envisioning what the airport could become. Any memories out there? Any picks of the cafeteria?

Thompson Municipal Airport (IATA: YTH, ICAO: CYTH) is an airport in Mystery Lake located 3 nautical miles (5.6 km; 3.5 mi) north of Thompson, Manitoba, Canada. It is the third-busiest airport in Manitoba after Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport and Winnipeg/St. Andrews Airport.

History

Thompson Airport was developed originally by the International Nickel Company in 1961 to support their mining operations and had one runway 3,000 ft (914 m) in length.

The airport was transferred to Transport Canada in 1963. It was then operated by the Local Government District of Mystery Lake until March 2000, when ownership was taken over by the Thompson Regional Airport Authority, which is the current operator.[1][2]

The airport is served by Calm Air and Perimeter Aviation with flights to Winnipeg.[5][6] There are also bases for Custom Helicopters,[7] Wings Over Kississing,[8] Fast Air[9] Royal Canadian Mounted Police Air Services Branch and Manitoba Government Air Services. During the firefighting season, Thompson is home to the Government Air water bombers.
