12/3/11 Two Vows

Psalm 132:1-18                                                        Saturday, December 3, 2011
Key Verse: 132:12                                                  Kevin Jesmer NIU UBF

“If your sons keep my covenant and the statutes I teach them, then their sons will sit on your throne for ever and ever.”

Dear Lord Heavenly Father, thank you for your love and your truth. I want to dwell in your grace. I want to live and walk in your truth. Lord, guide us in regards to ministry. We are becoming the rejected ones. Show us the way that we should go. I commit to you. I commit to the people of God. I commit to your mission. I commit to following Jesus, daily as my Lord and my Savior. I pray that you may bless tonight’s Christmas concert. Help us to have joyful fellowship with 5 other Christian churches. We want to worship you Jesus. I pray that you may open up Jennifer’s eyes and guide her along the right path. Help her to worship you on your Sabbath Day. Help her to find the right campus where she can build up her spiritual life. I pray Lord, that you plant your word in my heart. I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen!

1. David’s vow (1-10).

Verses 1-10, “ LORD, remember David and all his self-denial. 2 He swore an oath to the LORD, he made a vow to the Mighty One of Jacob: 3 “I will not enter my house or go to my bed, 4 I will allow no sleep to my eyes or slumber to my eyelids, 5 till I find a place for the LORD, a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.” 6 We heard it in Ephrathah, we came upon it in the fields of Jaar: 7 “Let us go to his dwelling place, let us worship at his footstool, saying, 8 ‘Arise, LORD, and come to your resting place, you and the ark of your might. 9 May your priests be clothed with your righteousness; may your faithful people sing for joy.’” 10 For the sake of your servant David, do not reject your anointed one.”

David swore an oath not to allow sleep to his eyes till he found a place for the ark and a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob. He wanted the priests to serve God with righteousness and the saints to sing for joy. David loved God and wanted God to be the center of his heart and his kingdom.

I realize here that I should follow David’s example and love God and seek to make Jesus the center of my life and my family and nation. I can make Jesus the center of my life, by having daily devotionals with humble repentant hearts towards the word of God. I open my heart to Jesus each day with repentance on my heart. I can engage my faith. I can make Jesus the center of my family by making Jesus the center of my life and my families life. I teach the Bible to my sons and I help them to stop and think about the word of God, deeply. It is sometimes hard, but in America, at least my house can be a small territory devoted to being the kingdom of God and all who abide here must abide under the Lordship of Christ. I can make Jesus the center by praying with my wife each day for the kids and for our Bible students.

I really want Jesus to be the center of our nation. But how do we devote our time and energies for this to happen? Ultimately it is in God’s hands. But at least I can pray for it to happen and I can teach the Gospel to a handful of people. I can raise my children up to be disciples of Jesus.

2. The Lord’s vow (11-18).

Verses 11-18, “The LORD swore an oath to David, a sure oath he will not revoke: “One of your own descendants I will place on your throne. 12 If your sons keep my covenant and the statutes I teach them, then their sons will sit on your throne for ever and ever.” 13 For the LORD has chosen Zion, he has desired it for his dwelling, saying, 14 “This is my resting place for ever and ever; here I will sit enthroned, for I have desired it. 15 I will bless her with abundant provisions; her poor I will satisfy with food. 16 I will clothe her priests with salvation, and her faithful people will ever sing for joy. 17 “Here I will make a horn[b] grow for David and set up a lamp for my anointed one. 18 I will clothe his enemies with shame, but his head will be adorned with a radiant crown.”

The Lord was pleased with David. He swore an oath to David to establish his throne forever through one of his descendants. Jesus fulfilled God’s vow. Jesus is the King. His kingdom lasts forever because Jesus is alive and rules from heaven forever. As God promised to make a horn grow for David in Zion, Jesus came to save sinners from Satan. Jesus is the lamp that shines into the darkness.

Jesus indeed fulfilled the promises of God to David. Jesus is my king. I want him to rule my life. He is alive and is guiding me and my family. He is our king forever who rules our hearts with peace and love. Jesus is my strength. He is the horn of my salvation. God has provided for me abundantly…both physically and spiritually. He is providing for my family. He will guide us along the most fruitful path in life. It may not be the path that I imagined, but it is indeed the best path. On my own, I can not but fall into my sins and weaknesses. I need the horn of salvation, my king Jesus. Lord, continue to be my king and the king of my family and the king of my Bible students. Be the horn of salvation and the light for the young people of America.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for being my eternal king, my strength and my light.

One Word: Jesus, the fulfillment of God’s vow
