heart of a shepherd

In John 21,  as Jesus was  reinforcing the grace of God in Peter’s heart and healing his soul, Jesus also planted a charge for Peter to be a shepherd of God’s flock. Jesus’ has a similar charge to all Christians, to be a shepherd or a mentor to people around us, to those whom Jesus has brought into our life. Look at John 21: 15-17, “15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16 He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.” (ESV)

Paul gives a similar charge to those who are mature in their walk with Jesus. Here is what is written in Acts 20:27-28, 27 For I have not hesitated to proclaim to you the whole will of God. 28 Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.” (NIV)

Read what Peter wrote in 1 Peter 5:1-3, To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed: Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.” (NIV)
