The Sowers And The Reapers Are Glad Together

Key verse: John 4:36,

“Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together.” (ESV)

To accomplish his redemptive work in this world, God has chosen that there must be teamwork among his people. Concerning teamwork, John 4:35-38 seems very appropriate. , “35 Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest. 36 Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. 37 For here the saying holds true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’ 38 I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.” (ESV)

Jesus shows here that the work of God is never a one man show. God calls his people to work together in the great harvest of souls. There are two groups of Christians working together, the sowers and the reapers. Sowers are the one who spread the seed of God’s word. They can be preachers, teachers, friends sharing the word of God, people supplying resources and expertise so that the word of God can spread. Reapers are the one’s who are there when God opens peoples’ hearts. They nurture it with a prayer that it will grow. They engage in discipleship. The sowers and the reapers are glad together. First the sowers come and do their job. Then the reapers come and do their job. And the harvest is brought in. When a harvest is good, the reapers are usually the happiest. But the harvest is not because of the reap¬er alone. The sowers have played a vital part, for without the sower, there would be no harvest. (Unless of course God chooses to work independently of everyone.) If the harvest seems small at first, the sowers are still happy. They know the nature of a seed’s growth and they have faith in the one who makes it grow, our God in heaven. They know that the harvest will come. In some ways this is harder work than reaping is. The reapers and the sowers may not even know each other. Yet, the sowers impart their faith to the reapers and together they rejoice.

As in any mission, Jesus has brought sowers and reapers together as a team. God is at work among them to reveal God’s glory and the Gospel, to the people. Only God could bring such a vast array of people together to work together. And together we rejoice. We are all glad, witnessing what God has done and is doing. We are glad together in Christ.
