Be Still And Know That God Is In Control

Psalm 46:10                                                                                     by Kevin E. Jesmer 7-20-15

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” (ESV)

be still and know that I am God

In this passage, the psalmist invites the reader to come and see the works of the Lord. He reminds us that God is in control of all events. He works through events to humble us and make us turn to him in faith. He presides over the rising and falling nations. He makes wars cease and he brings peace to troubled hearts. This power of God is so hard for us to fathom. Though we are so weak and limited, our God is almighty. He “…is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling.” (Ps 46:1-3, ESV)

As Christians, we make it our goal to exalt the name of Jesus, and his Gospel, among the nations. As we engage in Christ’s mission, we could be overwhelmed by the immensity and complexity of it all. We become aware of our own limitations, sins and weaknesses. We come to know opposing forces. We wonder how is it possible to embrace what God has called us to embrace. But the Almighty God invites each of us to stop our tiresome rushing around and worrying about this and that. He invites us to be still and know that he is God and worship him. He himself will exalt himself among the nations. He will be a fortress to our hearts and minds as we walk in his strength and rest in his peace.

When faced with a daunting task, Jesus whispers in my heart, “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”  When I become overwhelmed and feel like giving up, I have to simply pray, go for a walk, “give it some time”, and trust that Jesus will work things out in his own way and own time. He will exalt his own name. It does not depend on my feeble efforts at all. Praise the Lord for that.
