Waiting to be Murdered. Threats made by the life convict recalled since his escape.
GreenbayWis. Oct 2. – The forty or more persons who gave testimony against Jean Paul (correction: Philippe) Soquet, the wife murderer escaped from Waupun Saturday afternoon, are in a state of terror. When sentencing was pronounced against him, condemning him to life imprisonment Soquet swore that he would not be kept behind the walls and bars, but would return to take a life for everyday he spent in a penitentiary. When the news of Soquet’s escape reached the farmers in the locality where the murderer lived, the scene was amusing. Groups of people hurriedly congregated at different places in the vicinity and discussed the escape and his oft -repeated threats that should he ever get at liberty his effort would be to return and kill them. Nothing has been seen of or heard of the man so far, and owing to the small reward offered for his recapture officers here are taking no steps towards ascertaining whether or not he is in the section. Citizens and residents throughout the county are highly indignant over the manner in which such a fiend was allowed to make his flight. The Soquet murder case cost the county over $10,000.
