The most famous Jesmer in western Canada…Terry Jesmer the boxer.

I would say that the most famous Jesmer in western Canada is Terry Jesmer. He is  a boxer. He has some First Nation Native ancestry. He is the grandson of my great-great uncle, Hubert Jesmer. Hubert is the brother of my great grandfather, Nelson A. Jesmer. Their descendants account for most of the Jesmer’s in Western Canada. Terry is from Manitoba. He fought in boxing matches in Europe.

Terry’s father is Gorden Jesmer.  Gorden was the son of Hubert Jesmer, my Great-great uncle.

Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) – November 30, 1978, Winnipeg, Manitoba 72 WINNIPEG FREE PRESS, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 1978 Caplette vs. Jesmer a natural? Burns balks at bout By ALLAN BESSON As far as Wayne Caplette’s man- ager, Ed Yaremchuk, is concerned, “We are ready to accept the challenge, if the price is right.” Yaremchuk was responding to a challenge issued in Tuesday’s Free Press by Garth Sommers, manager of another Winnipeg middle- weight Terry Jesmer. The two fighters, both 24, broke into professional boxing ranks by fighting each other at the Winnipeg Convention Centre almost two years ago. They haven’t met in the ring since. Caplette holds the edge, having won the fight on a decision. Sommers said that his fighter was willing to put his purse up against Caplette’s in a 10-round winner-take-all fight. Yaremchuk is sure that some kind of contract could be agreed upon, but adds “the big difference is that Terry will have to do the fighting, not Sommers, who has done all the talking up until now.” “I’m ready to fight anybody, any time as long as the price is said Caplette. “But seriously though, I don’t think Jesmer poses much of a threat to me.” Sommers thinks differently, say- ing his fighter has been to school and is ready for the former Canadian amateur middleweight champion. “What does Sommers said Caplette. “One minute he tells you he doesn’t know anything, and the next minute he knows every- thing. He picks up a fighter and all of a sudden he is talking like Angelo Dundee.” Winnipeg fight promoter Tom Burns isn’t ready to put Caplette and Jesmer in the ring again for quite a while. “No. I think that Jesmer is still about three fights away from fighting a guy like said Burns. “I’d like to see Jesmer fight a few more guys before matching them up again. “But I’ll tell you one thing. If it went over six rounds, I’d go with Jesmer, because he has gone over that limit while Caplette hasn’t gone over six rounds yet.” Caplette was criticized by both Sommers and Jesmer as not having fought any good fighters while Jesmer has taken on all comers. “Who has Jesmer re- plied Caplette. “Only Morgan (Mike, of Minneapolis, losing by a split The only reason I don’t fight Morgan is because he won’t take a fight. And as for Clem Tucker (defeated Jesmer on a TKO, Oct. 4 in he is ranked something like fifth in the United States right now. I can get more beneficial fights than that. I’m trying to build myself up, and taking on just any fight isn’t going to do me any good.” Burns’ story is a little different. He claims he tried to match Caplette with Morgan for an eight- round fight, but the Winnipeg boxer wouldn’t agree to more than six rounds. “He (Caplette) can’t make up his says Burns. “The man has so much potential, but he has to learn to trust people more. What percentage is there in it for me if I mismatch him. I think he is ready to take on someone a little better than the guys he has been fighting up until now.” Getting back to the Caplette- Jesmer rematch idea, Caplette said, “I guess it might be a natural. Terry has some fans, and I hope I have a few fans in Winnipeg, too. But it doesn’t matter how many rounds he signs for, because he won’t last the distance anyway. “I saw Jesmer fight Morgan, and I don’t think his style has changed at all. In fact, I think Marv Arneson must be hopping mad to be com- pared to a fighter like Jesmer.” Jesmer claims to have learned his in-fighting technique from Arneson, five-time Canadian amateur welterweight champion. Jesmer will meet Morgan in a scheduled eight-round rematch Tuesday at the Convention Centre. Caplette is not listed on the card as he claims a suitable opponent was not available. Rounding out the card is a double main event, featuring lightweights Al Ford of Edmonton against Tom Tarantino of Milwaukee in a scheduled 10-rounder, and another 10- rounder a light heavyweight bout between Pat Cuillo of Buffalo and Karl Zurheide of Milwaukee. The fourth fight on the card pits Leroy Caldwell of Milwaukee against Erick Sedillo of Denver in a scheduled eight-round heavyweight fight. Four rounds of kick-boxing will open the card at 8 p.m. Stdlf pholo Middleweight Wayne Caplette denies criticism aimed at him from Jesmer camp. Sanction dispute unsettled OTTAWA
