The Norlander Candy Shop, next to the Strand Theater

2nd or 3rd Generation page

Next to the Strand Theater was a newsstand store, the Norlander. This small store molded many young lives. It is where I took a dollar and bought ten to fifteen comic books. I could bring all kinds of penny candy home in a paper bag. I could buy MAD magazines. I could dream of buying plastic models. And when I bought them I could buy the paints and glue to build them. There were large assortments of candy and collector cards. My dad sent me there many times with a letter for the clerk to sell me packs of No. 7 Black Cat Cigarettes for him. It is where we went to after the movies were out. There doesn’t seem to be pictures of the interior of the Norlander store, but with a Google search engine I could reconstruct what I remember. I can remember the things they sold, candy, comics, magazines, cigarettes, model, model supplies. And so here it is, a photo essay constructed from memory and Google. There are pics of the Strand building in 1961, before the Norlander, when a pharmacy was there. If anyone has any photos to add to this recreation attempt, please post. I used call words like “vintage newsstand”, “vintage comic stand”, etc.
